The Film

"Familiar Stranger" marks Ace Mahbaz’s debut short as writer-director. Set almost entirely in one location, the film is a dialogue-driven encounter about attraction, miscommunication and the small emotional risks people take when trying to be understood.

Developed from the page through to final delivery, the film reflects Ace’s hands-on creative process across writing, directing and post-production. With a background in acting, he brings a character-first sensibility to the film, using rhythm, humour and emotional subtext to explore how language can both connect people and get in the way.

 Festival Selections & Screenings

A Familiar Stranger has screened at 16 international festivals, including Slamdance Film Festival, London Short Film Festival, Encounters Film Festival, HollyShorts, New York Shorts International Film Festival, and Bolton Film Festival.
